Transfer News: Liverpool Boss Brendan Rodgers To Keep Spending After Alexis Sanchez Snub

Brendan Rodgers is adamant Liverpool do not have a problem signing the best players after Alexis Sanchez rejected a move to Anfield and he intends to keep on spending following the sale of Luis Suarez.

Liverpool had been interested in bringing in Sanchez from Barcelona, but the Chile international instead opted to join Premier League rivals Arsenal.

However, Rodgers is not concerned that Liverpool will struggle to add top-class players to their squad and cited geography as the reason for Sanchez’s decision to move to Arsenal.

“I don’t think so,” said Rodgers when asked if there is an issue of Liverpool attracting top talent following Sanchez’s snub. “That was one where geography dictated where he wanted to go – simple as that. It’s been the other way.

“Lots of players are really impressed by what we are doing as a club and really excited about coming to Liverpool.

“It wasn’t due to a lack of ambition by the club. It was about where the player and his family wanted to choose to live.

“He’s a fantastic player and would have suited us. His profile would have been great but it was not to be and we move on.”

Liverpool have money to spend in the transfer market after accepting Barcelona’s offer for Suarez, and Rodgers has already added Lazar Markovic, Emre Can, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert to his squad this summer for almost £60million.

The likes of Loic Remy, Divock Origi, Dejan Lovren and Ben Davies have also been linked with moves to Anfield, and Rodgers is prepared to continue strengthening his squad.

“The signings we have made have no relation to Luis going, absolutely – these were players that were always earmarked to come in,” Rodgers added.

“We felt last year we just never had the depth and we are in the Champions League this year so we have to ensure we have as strong a squad as possible.

“Obviously Luis going gives us the clout to go and spend more and we are getting the right type of player in.

“But we certainly won’t spend just for the sake of spending. It has to be the sort of player who is going to improve us.

“We are working hard behind the scenes to find players, but it will not be a direct replacement. We are looking for several players who can add to what we have and improve us again.”
