November 04, (THEWILL) – Arsenal defeated Zurich 1-0 at home on Thursday, to secure first place in Group A of the Europa League, thanks to an outstanding goal by Kieran Tierney.
The English Premier League side led by Mikel Arteta was defeated 2-0 by PSV in their previous Europa match, but they bounced back with a much-improved performance and a vital win to avoid the competition’s knockout stage playoffs.
Tierney’s thunderous first-half goal at their Emirates Stadium, where Adria Guerrero had a second-half equaliser disallowed in an otherwise dominant Arsenal performance, proved to be the game’s winner.
After winning the group, which PSV finished second in, Arsenal will avoid teams like Barcelona and Juventus in the playoffs draw on Monday. Bo Henriksen’s Zurich was eliminated from Europe after this loss and finished last in the group.
Both teams are back in domestic football on Sunday, as Zurich travel to Lugano in the Swiss Super League, while Arsenal takes on London rivals Chelsea, at Stamford Bridge in a crucial EPL fixture.
