August 26, (THEWILL) –Â Anthony Martial will not be able to travel with Manchester United on Saturday, when they visit Southampton, according to club manager, Erik ten Hag.
After a promising preseason, the Frenchman missed the first two Premier League games due to fitness difficulties, but he came off the bench to assist Marcus Rashford in the 2-1 triumph over Liverpool.
Speaking on team news ahead of the weekend fixture, Ten Hag said: “Anthony Martial is not fit. Casemiro is fit, he did all the training sessions. He [Martial] came out with a problem with his Achilles. I hope he will be available for the next game.”
Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho both scored on Monday night, so Martial had been anticipated to start alongside them. However, because of his absence, Anthony Elanga is likely to keep his place in the starting lineup, and Cristiano Ronaldo will once again sit on the bench.
After losing their opening matches to Brighton and Brentford, the win over Liverpool moved United up to 14th. However, they still need to win at St. Mary’s in order to move further up the standings.
