June 02, (THEWILL) – Iga Swiatek won her 33rd match in a row, defeating Jessica Pegula 6-3 6-2 to advance to the French Open semi-finals.
Swiatek had dropped her first set of the competition in the previous round against Qinwen Zheng, and, once again, she struggled against Pegula, making 28 unforced errors and 30 wins in a one-hour and 31-minute match.
The world number one was able to break serve in the first set despite replays suggesting that the ball had bounced twice immediately before she was able to flick over the winner.
That controversy aside, Swiatek won seven of the next eight games to take control of the quarter-final, 6-3 4-1, en route to a 33rd straight win and a meeting with first-time Grand Slam semi-finalist Daria Kasatkina. The Pole is 3-1 against the 25-year-old Kasatkina but she has been letting her motivation to take control of her nerves feed her drive to excel.
Kasatkina defeated Veronika Kudermetova 6-4 7-5(5) earlier in the day to set up the semi-final against Swiatek.
