June 29, (THEWILL) – To secure her record 36th straight win in women’s Tennis and progress to the second round at Wimbledon, Iga Swiatek overcame a minor hiccup against qualifier, Jana Fett, on Tuesday.
The world number one was able to overcome a determined Fett comeback to win 6-0 6-3 and maintain her unbeaten streak after cruising through the first set with relative ease, as she strives to follow up her success at the French Open earlier this month with a pair of Grand Slam victories.
After just 22 minutes, Fett had already suffered a double break and a 5-0 deficit because she was unable to keep up with her opponent from the outset.
In her final service game of the set, the Croatian managed a momentary fightback but was unable to capitalise on two game points before Swiatek was awarded the first point on a long forehand. Despite this, Fett fought back to take the second set and quickly found herself up 3-1.
However, she was unable to capitalise on five break points in the fifth game, which allowed Swiatek to mount a comeback. Following Swiatek’s tie-breaking backhand that cost Fett her break advantage, the top seed won the following three games to advance to the second round.
