BEVERLY HILLS, March 02, (THEWILL) – The highest class of international auto racing for single-seater racing cars, the Formula one (F1), is set for its busiest day yet ahead of the commencement of its new season. On Tuesday, excitement for the racing calendar will take on new highs as reigning world champion squad Mercedes and the 5th racing team from 2020 Alpine unveil their new cars for 2021.

It is the final full week before preseason testing kicks off in Bahrain. This has traditionally become an unofficial launch week since racing teams have taken it as a popular time to showcase their new cars for the season.

In the last two weeks, fans of the sport have been thrilled by the official car presentations by McLaren, AlphaTauri, Alfa Romeo and Red Bull. The remaining five teams have the next four days to bring their latest machines for 2021 to the public. “Super Tuesday” marks the beginning for these remaining teams.

F1 champions Mercedes will take the cover off the W12, its new car, as it sets out its stall for an eighth consecutive championship victory with British race driver, Sir Lewis Hamilton, leading the charge.

Mercedes W12 said to not be too dissimilar from the design from the previous season, but there have been a series of minor tweaks to make it a formidable challenger for podium finishes.

Meanwhile, the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 racing team underwent a number of big changes over the winter, inside the organisation that owns the company. There was a change in the ownership structure as principal partner INEOS become a one-third owner, while team principal Toto Wolff committed his future to the team by upping his shareholding to become part owner.

While it took some considerable time to get that negotiation sorted, a pending contract decision with lead driver and world champion Hamilton dragged endlessly beyond the term of the previous contract so that, for a while, the Knight of the British empire was a free agent.

However, having successfully seen out the structural adjustments required for the partnership with INEOS, the management team also negotiated a new one-year contract extension with Hamilton against the driver’s wishes for more than one year. The record-extending champion will face the media on Tuesday for the first time since the contract took effect.

Alpine, the upcoming Formula One constructor scheduled to make its debut with the start of the 2021 F1 World Championship, will follow suit after the unveiling of the 2021 Mercedes car. Alpine will reveal its new car in a virtual launch this afternoon following the rebranding of what used to be the Renault team.

To whet the appetite of the facing world, Alpine issued a teaser livery in January, but Tuesday’s unveiling is the full-season livery for the new A521 car that will be driven by Esteban Ocon and two-time world champion Fernando Alonso on the Alpine brand.

After his unfortunate accident while cycling last month, as covered by THEWILL, Alonso, who is making a return to F1 this year after two seasons away, will not be present for the Alpine launch as he continues to recuperate and prepare for testing.

The virtual launch of the new Alpine car, which is a first but welcomed development due to the times, will be attended by its new management team including CEO Laurent Rossi and racing director Davide Brivio, who will make his first appearance since leaving the Suzuki MotoGP team.

After the unveiling of “Super Tuesday”, it will be the turn of Aston Martin for a Wednesday afternoon spotlight with the launching of its new AMR21 car with Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll, the racing drivers of Aston Martin for the 2021 season.

Haas, who ended 2020 in ninth place, will present the livery for its new car on Thursday, before Williams (10th) rounds out the week of launches on Friday. By the weekend, therefore, Ferrari will be the only team yet to unveil a new car. Their event is scheduled for Wednesday, March 10, which is just two days before the start of the Bahrain pre-season testing.
