October 5, (THEWILL) – Japan’s women’s national team, the Nadeshiko Japan and the Super Falcons of Nigeria are scheduled to play a friendly match at the NOEVIR Stadium in Kobe on Thursday, October 6.

Both national sides will use the friendly as part of their preparations for the FIFA Women’s World Cup that will take place next year.

THEWILL recalls that the Super Falcons earned a spot in the World Cup by making it to the semifinals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in June in Morocco. The nine-time WAFCON champions, however, had a poor tournament finale, falling to Morocco in the round of 16, then to Zambia in the bronze medal game.

Since that match, things for the team led by coach Ralph Waldrum have not gone any better. The Falcons were defeated by the Americans in both of their friendly games, first being thrashed 4-0 before putting up a valiant effort in a 2-1 loss three days later. In contrast, Japan recently beat Finland, Serbia, the Korea Republic, and Chinese Taipei resoundingly to further establish their dominance in female football.

This is Nigeria and Japan’s fourth encounter. Two of the previous three games were won by the 2018 World winners, who prevailed 2-0 and 2-1 in consecutive friendlies in 2013. But, Nigeria eliminated Japan from the 2004 Olympic Games in Greece by one goal in their only competitive match.
