October 6, (THEWILL) – The 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup champions, Japan, defeated the Super Falcons 2-0 in the team’s most recent pre-tournament friendly match at the Noevir stadium in Kobe.

Billed as part of the team’s preparations ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, the loss extended the losing streak of Nigeria’s senior women’s national football team to five straight games.

As THEWILL reported, the Falcons had faced the USA national team twice in October, both of which they lost to add to the two losses at the end of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco this year.

With some outstanding play, the Falcons managed to keep the Japanese at bay in the first half but could not hold out for the entire 90 minutes. Indeed, four minutes was all it took for the Falcons to be down by two goals. Mina Tanaka scored the game’s first goal in the 64th minute after Naomoto floated a free kick into the box. Four minutes later, she added a second goal when she converted a penalty kick after Ohale Osimachi fouled a Japanese player.

A defensive blunder opened the opportunity for the Japanese to notch a third goal in the 73rd minute, but Super Falcons goalie Chiamaka Nnadozie made a crucial stop to keep the scoreline at 2-0 until the final whistle.
