Super Falconets Finish U-20 World Cup Group Stage With Perfect Record, Beat Canada 3-1

August 18, (THEWILL) – An Esther Onyenezide brace and a late goal from Chioma Olise, helped the Super Falconets of Nigeria overcome an early goal deficit and defeat the young ladies from Canada to maintain their perfect group stage performance.

Nigeria won its first two games of the campaign, drilling past France and South Korea with their lone-goal victories, but to clinch first place in group C, they only needed to not lose against Canada in their final match. It looked like it was not going to happen as Super Falconets conceded for the first time when the Canadians took advantage of a mistake by Monle Oyono in goalkeeping to grab the lead after only four minutes.

The Super Falconets rallied and immediately placed Canada under a barrage of attacks, which yielded results in the 20th minute when the referee awarded Nigeria a penalty for a handball in the Canadian box. Onyenezide stepped up to put the ball in the back of the net. Onyenezide was there again for Nigeria’s second penalty after Mercy Idoko was brought down in the box and she finished it beautifully.

Even though Canada appeared dangerous in the dying minutes of the first half, which finished two goals to Nigeria, the game cooled off in the second period with the Super Falconets proving the more superior side.

The 2-1 score appeared destined to be how the game will finish until extra time when Chioma Olise added the last flourish by converting a cross from Rofiat to guarantee a 3-1 victory for the Super Falconets. The quarter-final matchup will be between Nigeria and the Netherlands and will take place on Sunday.
