BEVERLY HILLS, June 05, (THEWILL) – In the concluding phase of the English Premier League awards season, there was something to celebrate for another Tottenham Hotspur player after the honours of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min with their inclusions into the season-ending Team of the Year.
Spurs Argentine midfielder Erik Lamela’s sensational and stylish goal in one of the North London Derbies of the just concluded season has won the Premier League Goal of the Season. The outrageous Rabona which gave Spurs the lead in the Sunday, March 14 fixture at the Emirates was a beauty to watch.
However, Lamela’s effort and the goal ended negatively as Martin Odegaard equalised for the Gunners before an Alexandre Lacazette penalty gave the hosts victory. Then, a quickfire pair of cards saw Lamela sent off in the 76th minute.
It did nothing to detract from Lamela’s exquisite goal, which was his second Rabona in the EPL, and it finished ahead of some equally quality strikes from Manchester United’s Edinson Cavani and the West Ham United pair of Manuel Lanzini and Sebastien Haller.
In all, the other nominees were:
James Maddison (City 2-5 Leicester, September 27)
Lanzini (Tottenham 3-3 West Ham, October 18)
Ola Aina (Fulham 2-0 West Brom, November 2)
Haller (West Ham 1-1 Palace, December 16)
Mohamed Salah’s second goal (West Ham 1-3 Liverpool, January 31)
Bruno Fernandes (United 3-3 Everton, February 6)
Erik Lamela (Arsenal 2-1 Tottenham, March 14)
Jesse Lingard (Wolves 2-3 West Ham, April 5)
Cavani (United 1-1 Fulham, May 18)
In other award news, THEWILL reported that Manchester City defender Ruben Dias was announced as the Premier League Player of the Season after a stellar debut campaign at the Etihad. His team-mate Phil Foden was then named Young Player of the Season, denying Kane of the honour.
Expectedly, Pep Guardiola was also revealed as the Premier League Manager of the Season, following their impressive 12-point title victory and the nature of their recovery from a show start to the season.
The PFA also revealed its Team of the Year on Friday — it was as follows:
Ederson (Manchester City), Joao Cancelo (Manchester City), John Stones (Manchester City), Dias (Manchester City), Luke Shaw (Manchester United), Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City), Ilkay Gundogan (Manchester City), Fernandes (Manchester United), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Salah (Liverpool), Son Heung-min (Tottenham Hotspur).
