June 06, (THEWILL) – Spain’s undefeated start in the UEFA Nations League was saved by a last-minute header from Inigo Martinez, who deprived the Czech Republic of their first ever victory over La Roja.

Spain had looked rusty in their Nations League debut against Portugal in midweek, and they looked rustier when Jan Kuchta broke their offside trap after just four minutes, rushing through to unselfishly send in Jakub Pesek, who could not miss.

The Spaniards dominated possession after the goal, reaching a high of 75%, but were unable to generate much. And, after a disappointing first half, Gavi scored an equaliser right before halftime, his first international goal.

The second half was more open, with both teams trading opportunities before Kuchta seized centre stage once more. On 55 minutes, he ran in alone onto a long punt and should have put the home side back in ahead, but his attempt sailed wide. However, 11 minutes later, the Lokomotiv Moscow striker got in behind Unai Simon again and beautifully chipped him to restore the hosts’ lead.

The additions of Alvaro Morata and Marco Asensio almost immediately produced results. Morata’s first touch was to play in Asensio, whose quick strike cannoned back off the upright. But, Asensio proved crucial as he crossed to Martinez, a last-minute floater that Martinez’s headed past the line. After a VAR review, the goal was allowed, and Spain escaped with a draw.
