January 12, (THEWILL) – Southampton thrashed newly promoted Brentford 4-1 at St. Mary’s in their Wednesday evening English Premier League fixture.

Jan Bednarek, Armando Broja, Che Adams were all on target, helped by an own goal from Alvaro Fernandez, as the Saints recorded their best win of the season and Brentford, their heaviest defeat since promotion.

Southampton got off to a strong start, making good use of their wing-backs, and took the lead in the fifth minute. The goal came from England star James Ward-Prowse, who whipped a superb corner ball into the six-yard box, where Bednarek was waiting to head home.

Broja’s wonderful play out and subsequent low pass across the goal could have made it 2-0 inside ten minutes, but no onrushing Southampton players grabbed it.

Brentford began to mature into the game after that phase of Southampton domination. Ivan Toney saw a good volleyed chance go begging before Vitaly Janelt showed his teammate how it is done a few minutes later with a magnificent goal.

On the full volley, the German grabbed a Bryan Mbeumo cross from the right side and scored his second goal of the season to level the scores and give Brentford some boost.

Following then, the game really opened up, as both teams struggled defensively.

On the half-hour mark, Oriol Romeu missed an opportunity to give Southampton a 2-1 lead by shooting far over the crossbar, but his midfield teammate Ibrahima Diallo did give Southampton the lead.

Diallo’s half-volley from the edge of the penalty area was well-struck, but it hit the post before ricocheting off Fernandez’s back and into the net.

Fernandez redeemed himself slightly after that tragedy by making a great stop to tip a Romain Perraud header out for a corner.

Despite Brentford’s best offensive efforts at the start of the second half, Southampton immediately countered to make it 3-1 in the 48th minute. The goal came after a fantastic slide through ball from Romeu to Broja, who was able to curl the ball past Fernandez after bombing into the box.

Throughout the rest of the half, the visitors gave it their all, but they lacked any sort of quality on or off the ball.

This was no clearer than when they conceded a fourth goal in the 70th minute as a result. Substitute Adams was able to sneak in behind the defence and chip the ball over the laughably awful Fernandez in goal thanks to some ridiculously bad defensive work.

Brentford actually improved their game in the final 10 minutes, with Mbeumo forcing Fraser Forster into a superb save, but it was far too little, far too late for Thomas Frank’s side.
