July 07, (THEWILL) – The African 100 metres’ record set by Nigerian athlete Olusoji Fasuba, which had stood since 2006, was broken on Tuesday by South Africa’s Akani Simbine who ran a winning race of 9.84 seconds at the Gyulai István Memorial World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet in Székesfehérvár, Hungary.

The aid of a decent tailwind of +1.2 m/s saw Simbine comfortably breeze home and cross the finish line ahead of second-placed Michael Rodgers of the United States, who finished at exactly 10.00s.

South Africa’s 27-year-old shaved five hundredths of the second off his previous personal best on the same track from 2016, and in so doing set aside the continental mark that Fasuba set in Qatar in 2006 of 9.85s.

Born on September 21, 1993, the South African sprinter who specialises in the 100m event, was a World Championships finalist in the men’s 100m in 2017, where he finished fifth, and in 2019, where he improved to a fourth finish. However, he finished as the 100m champion at the 2018 African Championships and 2018 Commonwealth Games.

He has also starred in the 4×100m relay for South Africa. He ran a victorious championship race at the African Championships in 2016 and 2018 but placed second at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, even though he helped set a South African record time of 38.24s in the competition.

At the men’s 4×100m relay in the 2021 World Relays, Simbine anchored South Africa to gold with his pace and good winds. The record holder received the baton three metres behind Brazil’s Paulo André de Oliveira, but managed to close the gap and finish one hundredth of a second ahead of Brazil with a time of 38.71s for the win.

He will carry the momentum of this new record and the confidence of his victorious pace into the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, giving him an edge for a medal at the Games. The first round of the men’s 100m at the Olympics is set for July 31‚ with the semifinals and final scheduled for August 1.
