BEVERLY HILLS, June 04, (THEWILL) – On Friday, the Singapore Formula One Grand Prix was cancelled due to overall concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic according to race organisers. This will be the second consecutive cancellation of the GP in Singapore and for the same concerns.

Colin Syn, the deputy chairman of Singapore GP Pte Ltd. said: “To cancel the event for a second year is an incredibly difficult decision, but a necessary one in light of the prevailing restrictions for live events in Singapore.

“We would not be able to deliver a full event experience fans have come to expect over the years, while safeguarding the health and safety of our fans, contractors, volunteers and staff.”

In normal times, the race often attracted tens of thousands of fans from around the world, with concerts and other entertainment around the sidelines for a truly wholesome thrilling experience. But, the pandemic limited all that to just the race while tickets for this year’s race had yet to go on sale.

In the calendar of races for the season, Singapore follows Canada to be struck off the calendar. However, there is the likelihood that those two will not be the last to fall victim of COVID-19 enforced cancellations.

From the original list of 23 rounds, races in venues around Japan, Brazil, Mexico and Australia are all uncertain. For now, Australia has already been rescheduled to November but travel to the country is heavily restricted and might not improve before the rescheduled dates.

To keep the races complete, a Formula One spokesman said the sport had alternatives to fill the gap when necessary. The spokesman said: “We continue to work with all promoters during this fluid time and have plenty of options to adapt if needed,” he said.

There is the possibility that Turkey, which had been due to replace Canada but was then also scrapped, would be a possible stand-in with talk also of China making a return and a second potential race in the United States to make sure no gaps remain.

For the US GP, Austin, Texas, is due to host in late October. However, the F1 can ask them to step up with a double-header to take up cancellations that may come up due to COVID-19 concerns. There is also speculation that Indianapolis is under consideration as another option.
