July 27, (THEWILL) – The biggest name in Olympics gymnastics Simone Biles has pulled out of the women’s team final after her opening vault. This immediately sparked fears that the American would also miss the individual finals, a sorry outcome for the Tokyo Olympics.
THEWILL recalls that the multi-talented 24-year-old gymnast cut a disappointed figure after bailing out mid-air in the vault and stumbling upon landing. She also had a mixed display in qualifying, as she scraped into the final on the balance beam and overshot her landing in the floor. She was then seen walking off the floor with her bag and a trainer.
Although Biles returned to the arena and gave a quick pep talk to her American teammates, but she was removed from the uneven bars – with Grace McCallum, Jordan Giles and Sunisa Lee named for USA instead. It now seems her taking to and hugging her teammates was a farewell.
This was followed with a confirmation that Biles would not take play any further part in the competition for Team USA.
Just by qualifying for Tokyo, Biles became the first woman since 1992 to advance to all six possible Olympic finals — the team final, individual all-around final and vault, floor, beam and uneven bars final.
She was leading the all-around ranks before an uncharacteristic shaky sequence led to her nearly missed out on beam final entirely. The Olympic gymnastics will lose some colour in her absence.
