October 27, (THEWILL) – Napoli defeated Rangers 3-0 in Naples on Wednesday, to put the tenuous chances of the Scottish side playing Europa League football in jeopardy while putting additional pressure on the manager, Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
Rangers’ chance of finishing third was down to getting a win against Napoli and Liverpool defeating Ajax. However, while Jurgen Klopp’s team played their part, Rangers did not do themselves any favours as they were easily defeated by the Serie A leaders, who won all five of their UCL games.
Giovanni Simeone ensured Napoli was in front after just 11 minutes and five minutes later, the forward added another goal by converting a cross from Mario Rui. It was a statement from the striker to justify Luciano Spalletti, starting him in place of Victor Osimhen. Leo Ostigard headed in a corner to wrap up the game.
Rangers are three points behind Ajax, and after a 4-0 loss in their first encounter, Van Bronckhorst’s team needs a miraculous outcome in Amsterdam to secure third place and a spot in the Europa League.
Before that, the Scottish side will host Aberdeen on Saturday, in the Premiership while Napoli will seek to remain at the summit of Serie A when they take on Sassuolo on the same day.
