SAN FRANCISCO, July 09, (THEWILL) – Hundreds of members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, also known as Shiites, on Tuesday, stormed the National Assembly and shot a police officer and a civil defence officer.
Things turned violent when the protesters, who are demanding the release of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, tried to gain entry into the complex.
After gaining entry into the first gate of the Assembly, the protesters damaged some vehicles including a police van with a policeman injured in the process.
The dreaded Shiite members overpowered the policemen at the gate, collected one of their guns and shot the two security operatives.
The armed protesters also smashed windows of the National Assembly at the main gate and damaged policemen vehicles within the premises.
Also smashed were vehicles of visitors caught in the web during the violent protest.
However, detachment of armed policemen have been stationed around the National Assembly gates and the green areas.
It was also gathered that the protesters were dispersed with teargas by security operatives.
The gates to all the National Assembly premises have been closed as staff and other accredited persons ran for dear lives.
