SAN FRANCISCO, August 15, (THEWILL) – Borno State governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, on Thursday, blamed the growing spate of insecurity and insurgency in the country, especially Boko Haram, on youth unemployment, saying the federal government should act fast in addressing youth unemployment.

Shettima, who spoke at the opening session of the United States- Nigeria Bi-national Commission (BNC) Regional Security Cooperation Working Group meeting in Abuja, said “the underlying causes of the present security challenges in our country is as a result of joblessness, illiteracy, hunger and disease.” He stressed that the problems have zonal or regional inclination as it is like an epidemic that could spread to other parts of the country.

The governor, however, hailed the United States for showing interest in Nigeria’s stability by partnering to help in addressing the security challenges even as he appealed to the United States to improve in its collaboration with the Nigerian security authorities for the benefit of both countries and rest of the world.

Speaking earlier, the U.S Under Secretary, Political Affairs, Wendy Sherman , had assured that the United States will continue to work with Nigeria to develop a multifaceted strategy to counter the threats posed by Boko Haram, saying the Nigeria Bi-national Commission has been a successful forum to advance mutual goals.
