Sergio Perez Promises To “Over-deliver” For His New F1 Racing Team, Red Bull

BEVERLY HILLS, January 23, (THEWILL) – Mexican professional racing driver Sergio Perez, who moved to Formula One racing team Red Bull at the end of last season, has vowed to “over-deliver” in his debut season with his new unit. The 30-year-old is determined to take advantage of a long-awaited F1 opportunity and make the most of it.

In an interview where he spoke ahead of preseason testing on the F1 circuit, Perez insisted on his overall readiness for the “massive challenge” of taking on the competition, first from team-mate Max Verstappen and, more specifically, from world champions Mercedes.

A dramatic end to last season saw a superb Perez, who had lost his Racing Point seat for 2021 to Sebastian Vettel in one of the biggest transfer developments of last year, rewarded with a Red Bull contract.

Moving to Red Bull came after Perez impressed everyone when he drove to a maiden podium victory for himself at the Sakhir Grand Prix and Red Bull, who remain the main title rivals to Mercedes, gave him the drive left empty after they parted ways with Alex Albon, their former 24-year-old British-Thai driver.

Perez is one of the most experienced drivers to race for Red Bull with 191 race starts to his credit. This finally presents him the gilt-edged opportunity to prove himself towards the front of the grid this season.

On a visit to the Red Bull HQ, the Mexican captured the essence of his goal: “I was waiting all my career to get an opportunity with a top team. It finally came and I think it came at the right moment for me.”

Perez, who described the move as the fulfillment of a dream to race at the highest level, confessed he “never really considered Red Bull as an option” prior to the previous season since he was not part of a Red Bull driver programme renowned for producing racing bigshots as Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo and Verstappen.

In truth, Perez had never previously raced for a team that finished higher than fourth in the constructors’ standings in his 11 years in F1. With his Red Bull seat for the 2021 season, the driver is confident and intent on delivering Red Bull’s first championship since 2013.

“I am always pushing to the maximum and last year I finally had a car that I could show a bit more and people saw what I am capable of, but now is my big opportunity.

“I have to go onto the next step in all aspects and I think I’m ready for it. The only thing I was lacking was the opportunity. Now I have it, it’s up to me to make it work.

“I’m going to make sure I over-deliver. If we have a car that can win the championship, I’ll make sure we win it. And if not, and we only have a car that’s good enough for third, I will make sure that we finish second.”

However, just weeks after the World Motor Sports Council ratified the 2021 F1 calendar, it has already undergone a radical reshuffle with coronavirus concerns top-of-mind. The season will now begin in Bahrain on Sunday, March 28 and end in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, December 12.
