Serena Williams To Make Comeback At Wimbledon

June 14, (THEWILL) –

Serena Williams will compete in her first Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon since the last competition in England after receiving a wild-card spot in the main draw.

On Tuesday, Williams, who has not played since last year’s Wimbledon competition, hinted at a comeback on Instagram when she shared an image of a tennis ball with the caption: “SW and SW19. It’s a date. 2022 See you there. Let’s Go.”

In an April social media post alongside Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the 40-year-old tennis legend hinted that she would compete at the All England Club. Since then, she has only provided sporadic updates on her recuperation from a leg injury sustained early in last year’s Wimbledon first-round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

Williams is motivated to return since she is one Grand Slam championship away from tying Margaret Court for the most major singles titles in tennis history (24). Her most recent victory on a major stage was at the 2017 Australian Open.

She has made four Grand Slam finals since winning in Melbourne five years ago, but each time she has fallen short. Speaking recently, Williams admitted to thoughts about the missed opportunities to overtake Court.

“I should have been at like 30 or 32 [Grand Slam singles titles],” she said. “I should have had [the record], really, I’ve had many opportunities to have it. But I’m not giving up.”
