October 01, (THEWILL) – The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Projects (SERAP) has rejected President Muhammadu Buhari’s conditional lifting of Twitter operations in Nigeria.
The group urged the president to immediately and unconditionally lift the suspension of Twitter, as such a measure would allow Nigerians exercise their right to freedom of expression.
In a tweet on Friday, SERAP wrote: “BREAKING: We reject ‘conditional’ lifting of ban on Twitter in Nigeria by the Buhari administration.
“President Buhari must immediately and unconditionally lift the illegal suspension of Twitter, and allow Nigerians to freely exercise their right to freedom of expression.”
THEWILL reported that President Buhari had in a nationwide Independence Day broadcast directed a conditional lifting of the ban placed on Twitter operations in Nigeria, but only if the conditions set by the presidential committee are met.
The federal government suspended operations of the microblogging platform in the country on June 5, 2021, after Twitter deleted a tweet by President Buhari.
