Sensational Mbappe Hands PSG Cup Title With 2-0 Win; But Can They Top Ligue 1?

BEVERLY HILLS, May 20, (THEWILL) – French giants Paris Saint-Germain retained their Coupe de France crown as their centurion from this season, Kylian Mbappe, who set up the first goal and grabbed one for himself, turned in a star display in a 2-0 win over Monaco at the Stade de France in Wednesday’s final.

Neymar sat out the match as his suspension was upheld and with the Brazilian watching from the empty stands, Mbappe dominated the contest with his talent and pace and topped it all off with his 81st minute clincher.

The victory represents the 14th overall Coupe de France for Les Parisiens as they retained their title from last year’s 13th win. Monaco were seeking to take it for the first time since 1991 to add to the five previous wins they have but could not improve on a 2010 final loss to the same Parisian winners.

Monaco looked good for a competitive game throughout and substitute winger Gelson Martins came closest for the side but unfortunately, the Portuguese saw his deflected shot strike against the crossbar. Perhaps, if the enterprising winger had started the match, he could have been a more potent threat with a potential goal too.

However, it was PSG’s day to celebrate and to put the gloom of missing out on the big one in Europe behind them. Mauricio Pochettino has now won both of the domestic trophies so far played as manager, adding the Coupe de France to the Trophee des Champions, he had earlier won.

Although defending the Ligue 1 title remains a possibility, it is not entirely dependent on PSG as the final game of the season beckons. They have to defeat Brest in their final fixture to keep this slim hopes alive. But, for it to materialise, Lille, the league leaders must, at least, drop points or lose when they play Angers on the last day.

PSG are second, one point behind leaders Lille, and a final day win takes them two points ahead while a draw for Lille will only add one point to Lille to give the title to PSG. This will be how PSG will wish the season ends after the heartbreaking UCL ouster at the hands of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City of the English Premier League.

To ensure a strong finish PSG will again count on the Mbappe brilliance, which made the difference in the final. The 22-year-old finished the Coupe de France campaign with eight goal involvements (seven goals, one assist) from five matches. In that, he exceeded his own previous best performance in the competition, which was seven direct goal involvements in the 2017/2018 season.
