July 04, (THEWILL) – In Group A of the TotalEnergies 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON), Senegal won their first match in the competition’s history, defeating Uganda 2-0.
This victory was a significant milestone for Senegal and it was made even more so, given the pedigree of their opponents. Still, the Teranga Lionesses of Mame Moussa Cissé defeated the Ugandans by scoring a goal in each half.
The Senegalese team got on the scoreboard with a penalty kick that Diakhaté Ndeye converted in the 39th minute. Five minutes after halftime, Nguenar Ndiaye doubled their lead. The Uganda ladies laid siege on the Senegal post but could not help losing with a two-nil result.
Tenning Sene, the goalkeeper for the Lionesses, may have been an unimportant player for Senegal in the run-up to the tournament, but she seized the opportunity superbly to win “Woman of the Match”, after a magnificent display in goal for Senegal.
Senegal’s victory puts them in first place in Group A, passing Morocco, with whom they are tied on three points.
