Senate Approval Of Electronic Voting Laudable – George

October 14, (THEWILL) – A former deputy national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has commended the senate for reversing its earlier position on electronic voting and transmission of results.

He said the synergy between the parliament and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the electronic transmission of results is quite laudable.

In a release he issued and signed Thursday, George said the issue of electronic transmission of results which has now been approved by the Nigerian senate and is being harmonised by the joint House and Senate committees is indeed the right way forward for Nigerian democracy.

He said it signifies a significant new dawn in the strengthening of our young democracy.

George said, “The primitive manual system whereby results are physically carried often gives room for easy manipulation and the brazen distortion of the will of the people.

“Physically carrying result sheets from polling units to the wards, the local governments and other levels of administration is not only wrong, it is downright untidy, cumbersome and an absolute trigger for fraud and the disenfranchisement of our people.

“I salute the courage of the Senate for this noble initiative. It couldn’t have come at a better time. At a time when our people feel hapless and helpless about the continuity of our infant democracy, this is indeed the recipe to enliven us all and renew our commitment to build a greater nation.”
