Senate Adjourns Over Rep Olatoye’s Death, To Debate 2019 Budget Wednesday

SAN FRANCISCO, March 12, (THEWILL) – The Senate, on Tuesday, resumed sitting only to adjourn plenary till Wednesday over the death of a member of House of Representatives, Temitope Olatoye, representing Akinyele/Lagelu Federal Constituency of Oyo.

This was sequel to a Point of Order by the Senate Leader, Sen. Ahmad Lawan at the plenary as he urged the senate to suspend Tuesday’s plenary as a result of the demise of the lawmaker.

Coming under Order 43, he said as part of the National Assembly’s tradition, it was important to suspend legislative activities as a mark of respect.

“You will recall that Hon. Temitope Olatoye died during the elections and I hereby move a motion for adjournment till Wednesday,” he said.

The Senate Minority Leader, Biodun Olujimi seconded the motion while a minute silence was observed in honour of the deceased.

President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, who prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased adjourned plenary till Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Senate will begin deliberations on the 2019 budget on Wednesday.

Saraki, made the announcement at the resumption of legislative proceedings for the week.

THEWILL recalls that President Muhammadu Buhari on December 19, 2018, presented the 2019 budget proposal to a joint session of the National Assembly (NASS).

The N8.83 trillion budget proposal is intended to further place the economy on the path of inclusive, diversified and sustainable growth in order to continue to lift significant numbers of our citizens out of poverty.
