August 6, (THEWILL) – In their opening English Premier League match of the new season, Liverpool twice rallied from behind to draw 2-2 at Fulham, thanks to a Darwin Nunez equaliser and a late Mohamed Salah goal.
However, much of the praise will go to two-goal hero, Aleksandar Mitrovic, whose impressive display gave top-flight newcomers, Fulham, a well-deserved lead in the first half, only for Nunez to come off the bench to tie the score on Saturday at Craven Cottage.
With 18 minutes left, Virgil van Dijk fouled Mitrovic, and the striker dusted himself to convert the penalty to give the Cottagers the lead once more. However, Salah scored from close range after Nunez had placed the ball in his path to earn a point, and Jordan Henderson then hit the woodwork in stoppage time.
Salah has now scored in Liverpool’s opening EPL game for a record sixth straight season, but they did not perform well enough to win, and lost Thiago Alcantara to a hamstring injury. Fulham’s return to the top flight appeared to be challenging, but a sluggish Liverpool meant Marco Silva’s talented team could have pulled off a surprise victory.
On August 15, Liverpool will welcome Crystal Palace at Anfield, while Fulham will play Wolverhampton Wanderers on the road next Saturday.
