November 02, (THEWILL) – Darwin Nunez’s stoppage-time goal sealed a 2-0 victory over Napoli for Liverpool in Jurgen Klopp’s 400th game in charge, after Mohamed Salah’s late strike gave the hosts the lead and ended the I Partenopei’s unblemished start to the season.
Both teams were already guaranteed a spot in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League, but Liverpool needed a four-goal victory margin to overtake Napoli at the top of the group.
Salah and Nunez each scored a late goal for the Reds, with Salah sliding one over the line in the 85th minute after Alex Meret had stopped Nunez’s header from going in.
After having a Leo Skiri Ostigard goal disallowed for offside earlier, Napoli’s unbeaten streak of 17 games came to an end as Nunez added a second in the last action of the game.
Klopp’s side did not get the four goals they needed to qualify them as group winners, finishing second in Group A as a result of their record in head-to-head play. They will travel to Tottenham in the English Premier League for their next tie. With Napoli’s unblemished start to the season gone, they are next on a Serie A trip to Atalanta to keep their place at the top of the table.
