Rihanna Didn’t Inspire Ebute Meta, 50 Cent Did – Banky W

July 06, (THEWILL) – Bankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, has revealed that 50 Cent was the inspiration behind his hit song, Ebute Meta and not Rihanna, as generally assumed.

The father of one was speaking about his 2008 hit song during an episode of Afrobeat: The Backstory Documentary titled The American Dream and Local Rapper.

The documentary, which centres on the history and rise of Afrobeat genre premiered on Netflix on Thursday. It was produced by Ayo Shoniya.

The singer revealed that the song was inspired by 50 Cent due to the fact that the rapper was known at that time as using popular beats to promote his mixtape.

The singer cum politician said he decided to do the same with his hit song, while adopting the beat of Rihanna’s 2007 hit song, Umbrella.

“2006, 2007 was when 50 Cent was blowing up and he had this promotional strategy of doing mixtapes.

“He would take the hottest song on radio, take the instrumentals and then changed the words and then make funny versions or crazy version or whatever of them.

“And he built the buzz in America to the point that by the time Get Rich or Die Trying dropped, it was like insane. So, I was like okay, I’m going to do the same”, he stated.
