Ladies and Gentlemen.

May I welcome you all to this special occasion of the 2019 World Food Day (WFD) celebration. Today, Wednesday, 16th October, 2019, the department of Home Economics, AOCOED and the college make history by celebrating for the first time, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) World Food Day. I thank the Provost and the college management for granting the approval to our proposal and also for elevating this event to the status of a college programme.

The World Food Day was established by FAO member countries at the 20th General conference in November, 1979. This celebration, makes it the 40th and every year over 150 member countries of United Nations have used this day to raise awareness of the issues behind poverty and hunger.

For us Home Economics professional, this year our international umbrella organization, International Federation of Home Economics (IFHE), which holds a consultative status with the FAO, has directed that its members worldwide join in the WFD celebration with the objective of promoting the value of Nutrition Education and research in their working context. Home Economists are experts who foster sustainable practices at household level with the aim to achieve an optimal living for all. We are therefore better placed to drive the campaign for healthy diets to promote good health and wellbeing.

The theme for this year’s WFD is “Our actions are our future. Healthy diets for a #zerohunger world”. The young people, our children, are the future. We have to make a deliberate attempt to give Nutrition Education to them at this early stage of their formative years. This will ensure that they cultivate and practice healthy feeding habits which they will pass from generation to generation. These were our thoughts in the department of Home Economics and we have today, invited the pupils and students of our demonstration and mentor schools to be our special and target guests. Also included in our lists of distinguished guests are the AOCOED food vendors. These service providers in the AOCOED food sector are crucial in the quest for healthy diets because they cook and serve the meals to the community so they must not be left out of the campaign for safe and healthy meals. A record list of twenty- one food vendors are here. I welcome you all.

The highlights of todays’ programme is

(i) A Brief talk on Nutrition Education and food safety tips.

(ii) Demonstration on the preparation of Nutritious quick meals and sauces.

I thank you all for honouring our invitation to celebrate with us today, I hope that you enjoin our hospitality and help us pass the message of healthy diets and safe meals for our families.

Thank you and God bless.

Long live Department of Home Economics, AOCOED, Long live AOCOED, Long live IFHE, long live Lagos state, long live Nigeria.
