BEVERLY HILLS, April 24, (THEWILL) – English Championship side Watford FC secured a quick promotion to the Premier League after a 1-0 win over Millwall on Saturday, making a swift return to the top flight. They suffered relegation to the Championship last season and Ismaila Sarr’s penalty kick was enough to see off Millwall at Vicarage Road and confirm their climb.

It is deserving reward for the hard work Xisco Munoz’s side have put in to function in superb form that they have done throughout 2021. They won 16 of their 23 Championship matches this calendar year as a clear demonstration of their determination and focus.

Watford only needed to draw with Millwall to confirm their return to the premiership after Bournemouth’s home defeat to Brentford on Saturday. But, they went one better and through Sarr’s goal from the penalty spot, which is the player’s thirteenth this season, they earned their ninth win in eleven games and sealed their EPL return.

Although the team parted ways with their Manager
Vladimir Ivic, who was appointed in the summer to instil discipline and bring organisation to the team but could not after four months in the role and Watford fifth on the table, they brought in Xisco from Dinamo Tbilisi to right the ship and beyond the results.

What the Spaniard did was to inject fresh energy and motivation, ingredients that were lacking until then to jump-start a run to promotion, which began when Watford won four of his first five matches in charge. They never looked back from then and have been in fine form ever since a goalless draw with Coventry in February marked a weak run of three league games without victory.

In their peak moment, Watford hammered Bristol City 6-0 at Vicarage Road at the very next match and have been impossible to crack. This form was helped by Sarr’s performance, which is making him a target for numerous Premier League clubs just as he was last summer. Midfielder Tom Cleverley deserves credit as well for how he led by example while veteran captain Troy Deeney was missing for long periods of the season.

Their relegation from the Premier League in the middle of a global pandemic last time was financially difficult for Watford, so an instant return to the top flight is a huge boost for their books. It also makes it possible to convince Sarr to stay for at least one more season as they will certainly require his sparkling performances as they climb up once again.

Their return was also facilitated by their ability to retain a number of key players last summer beginning with Deeney and including Cleverley, Ben Foster, Will Hughes and Kiko Femenia, who are all experienced Premier League operators. This makes the promotion all that worthwhile and they can hope to improve their numbers next season in the top flight.
