September 24, (THEWILL) – At the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, 47,367 spectators witnessed Arsenal humiliate North London rivals, Tottenham, 4-0, shattering the Women’s Super League attendance record.
The previous record, which was achieved in November 2019 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with 38,262 spectators, was greatly surpassed by the crowd at the Emirates and, according to Arsenal manager, Jonas Eidevall, it marked a pivotal milestone for women’s soccer.
The crowd got their money’s worth as Vivianne Miedema’s brace, along with goals from Beth Mead and Rafaelle, propelled Eidevall’s team to a commanding victory.
After shutting out their rivals, Arsenal became the first team in the history of the competition to keep eight straight clean sheets just as Miedema’s eight goals against Spurs set a new WSL record to go with the third attendance.
The historic event is another another high point for women’s sport in England. THEWILL recalls that when the Lionesses defeated Germany on July 31, an attendance record of 87,192 was set at Wembley Stadium for a men’s or women’s European Championship match.
