Reactions Sympathetic To Frank Lampard Trail His Exit From Chelsea

BEVERLY HILLS, January 25, (THEWILL) – On Monday, London premiership club Chelsea FC sacked manager Frank Lampard 18 months into a three-year contract with former Paris St-Germain boss Thomas Tuchel expected to replace him.

The 42-year-old Englishman leaves with the Blues in ninth place on the table in the aftermath of their 2-nil away loss to Leicester City with only one win in their past five matches in the Premiership.

In July, 2019, Lampard replaced Italian Maurizio Sarri when he took the job to manage the men of the club that he became synonymous with as a midfielder generalissimo. He qualified them for the Champions League and reached the FA Cup final in his first season in charge.

A 3-1 win victory against Leeds FC in December sent the Blues top of the Premier League as a series of clean sheets from new keeper Senegalese Edouard Mendy kept Chelsea winning. However, five defeats in their past eight league games, which is as many as they had in their previous 23, dragged them near mid-table.

Lampard’s experience as a player under the Roman Abramovich era must have prepared him for what was going to come as a result. The day of reckoning was becoming obvious as his stewardship was not up to par with the achievements of coaches who ended up sacked. His contributions to the glory of the club notwithstanding, the axe finally dropped on Monday.

Reactions to the brash severing of Lampard from his position by the Board at Stamford Bridge which must have had Champions League implications came swift and fast. Across social media, footballers (present and past), coaches in the EPL, Chelsea fans and football fans in general, all had something to say.

Most reactions were negative against the style at Chelsea, believing that given time and support, Lampard had the potential to turn things around and fulfill the dreams of many English fans looking for the day when an English coach will lead a Premiership side to lifting the trophy.

THEWILL collated a snapshot of these reactions below:

Michael Owen @themichaelowen
Absolutely staggering decision from @ChelseaFC to sack Frank Lampard. Where do you begin? Against the odds made top 4 last season and qualified impressively to the knockout stages of the @ChampionsLeague this season. Bought some good players who will settle in given time. Madness (Michael Owen is a former English footballer who played as a striker for Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Stoke City, as well as for the England national team).

Gary Lineker @GaryLineker
Reports that Frank Lampard will be sacked by @ChelseaFC today. Utterly ludicrous after his first bad run. It was always going to need time given so many new signings feeling their way into a new club. Patience being a virtue is seldom recognised in this sport. They never learn (Gary Lineker is a former English professional footballer and current sports broadcaster. He is regarded as one of the greatest English strikers).

Thiago Silva @tsilver3
I would like to thank you for everything you and your committee have done for me since the day I arrived. As I told you, it seemed like we had been working together for 10 years!! Thank you very much for everything . #FrankLampard #legend 💙💙

Roy Hodgson @CPFC
There’s no doubt he has the pedigree to be a very good manager. I can only wish him well and empathise with what’s happened. (Roy Hodgson is an English professional football manager and former player who is the manager of Premier League club Crystal Palace).

Pep Guardiola
People talk about projects and ideas. They don’t exist. You have to win or you will be replaced. I hope to see Frank soon and go to a restaurant with him when lockdown finishes. (Josep “Pep” Guardiola Sala is a Spanish professional football manager and former player, who is the current manager of Premier League club Manchester City).

Brendan Rodgers
It is a team and squad which needs time. Unfortunately he has not been given that time.
(Brendan Rodgers is a Northern Irish professional football manager and former player who is the manager of Premier League club Leicester City).

Opta @OptaJoe
12,545 – Frank Lampard gave 12,545 minutes of Premier League action to 11 different players aged 21 or younger during his time at Chelsea. Both of these tallies were more than any other club over this period. Belief (Opta Sports, formerly Opta Sportsdata, is a British sports analytics company. There are reports that claim German coach Thomas Tuchel has accepted to replace Lampard at the Bridge but the Blues are taking their time to make it official with a club announcement.
