July 12, (THEWILL) – English Premier League side Manchester United is reportedly inching closer to agreeing personal terms with centre-back Raphael Varane ahead of a proposed summer transfer. The Real Madrid defender could see a potential move to Old Trafford concluded in the coming weeks, if an agreement on terms is reached.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is seeking a new centre-back to play alongside the rejuvenated Harry Maguire and have seriously considered the likes of Pau Torres and Jules Kounde in recent months but will gladly have an experienced player like Varane in the side.

At 28, the World Cup-winning Frenchman can be a long-term investment and will provide nothing short of sterling defensive service for years to come. Varane’s search for a new challenge outside the Santiago Bernabeu could not have come at a more opportune time for Old Trafford and it will be good summer transfer business to get him.

What has aided the relative ease of getting the deal across the line has been the four-time Champions League winner’s interest in moving to Manchester. It saw the 2018 Ballon d’Or nominee begin to shop for alternatives with no new contract extension available, with just one year left on his current contract at the Spanish giants and with the exit of defensive partner Sergio Ramos.

Real will also be invested in seeing him leave this summer to make some money from the move rather than completely losing out if he leaves next year as a free agent, in much the same way as Ramos did at the end of his own contract.

The negotiations are expected to pick up pace with the Euro 2020 continental competition behind all sides now, although Varane is on a summer break after taking part in France’s participation in the tournament. As soon as he can get to Old Trafford, the finer details can be sorted and medicals done to finalise the move.
