February 11, (THEWILL) – Manchester United’s goal-scoring woes, according to interim head coach Ralf Rangnick, are not primarily down to Cristiano Ronaldo.

This defence of the Portuguese striker comes after Tuesday’s game that saw United draw 1-1 with Burnley, their third game in a row in which they have scored only one goal. Ronaldo, United’s top scorer this season with 14 goals across all competitions, was benched by Rangnick, who preferred Edinson Cavani.

“It’s not only about Cristiano Ronaldo, that he should score more goals, it is obvious,” Rangnick explained.

“I think we are creating enough chances and enough opportunities in the last couple of games, but we just didn’t score enough goals. But it is not only an issue with Cristiano, it’s also an issue with all the other players, especially with the offensive players that we do not score enough goals, if you bear in mind how many chances we create.

“This is also something that needs to get better in the next couple of weeks. As I said we played in both first halves, and against Burnley maybe 70 of those 90 minutes was very very close to the game-plan that we had spoken about before the game.

“Now it is about rewarding ourselves and also getting the results we deserve.”

Bruno Fernandes is in second place, seven goals behind Ronaldo, and Mason Greenwood, who has been suspended by the club, is in third place, with six goals.

If the Red Devils can manage a win at Southampton on Saturday, they may move into the top four in the Premier League, albeit temporarily.
