November 30, (THEWILL) – Mexico narrowly missed making it into the knockout stages of the World Cup, as their 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia at the Lusail Stadium put them behind Poland on goal difference.
El Tri were eliminated even though they were well on their way to advance as second best by slim margin until Salem Al Dawsari’s stoppage-time consolation goal for the Saudis found the net to the dismay of the Mexican supporters and team.
Poland, who had already suffered a 2-0 defeat to Argentina, had a better fair play record than Mexico, and that had been the potential factor for which side will progress up to that moment when Al Dawsari scored.
After second-half goals from Henry Martin and Luis Chavez, all Mexico needed to do was had to find a crucial third to ensure that they progressed, but they were unable to score the goal they had been after for so long.
Mexico and Saudi Arabia—along with their sizeable armies of travelling supporters—will return home, while Argentina will take on Australia, with Poland going against France in the round of 16.
