Qatar 2022: Costa Rica Stun Japan With Late Winner To Avoid Early Exit

November 27, (THEWILL) – On Sunday, Costa Rica defeated Japan 1-0 as a result of a last-second push for a result that opens the possibility for both Germany and themselves to remain in the World Cup.

With nine minutes left, Keysher Fuller looped a shot into the top-left corner of the goal, giving the dull game — which appeared destined to become the sixth goalless tie of the tournament — its best moment for the victors.

Costa Rica seized the lead with their first shot on goal in the competition, after Japan, who defeated Germany in one of the World Cup’s early upsets, had largely been the superior team, particularly in the second half.

Both sides are now on three points going into their final games as a result of the outcome, and Germany now has a chance to go to the knockout round with a win against Costa Rica in their final game regardless of what happens against Spain later on Sunday.

Costa Rica may now hope for a spot in the knockout round after the grit to recover from the seven-goal thrashing at the hands of Spain and will still be in the running when they play Germany on Thursday. A disgruntled Japan will rue missing a perfect opportunity to guarantee a place in the round of 16.
