February 06, (THEWILL) – Senegal’s President Macky Sall designated Monday a public holiday to commemorate the national football team’s first African Cup of Nations trophy with their triumph over Egypt.
Sall, who was scheduled to visit Comoros at the end of a trip that included Egypt and Ethiopia, cancelled the trip in order to greet the triumphant Lions on their return to Dakar at 2 pm, local time, on Monday.
THEWILL recalls that Senegal, led by Liverpool star Sadio Mane, defeated Egypt 4-2 in a penalty shootout in Cameroon on Sunday, after the game ended in a stalemate even with extra time played.
Senegal finally won their first ever Cup of Nations trophy after two prior final disappointments in 2002 and 2019. Their coach, Aliou Cisse, was named coach of the competition and took home the Best Manager award.
Sall will welcome and decorate the Lions of Teranga on Tuesday at the presidential palace in Dakar, according to RTS television, the state-owned media network.
