BEVERLY HILLS, June 05, (THEWILL) – The female team of the Paris Saint-Germain club beat Dijon 3-0 on Friday, a victory that ensured that Les Parisiennes won their first Division 1 Feminine title. By so doing, PSG broke Lyon’s 14-season dominance in the league when it seemed a virtual impossibility.
The contention to take the lead of the league’s standings went down the wire as the winner was only resolved on the final day of the 2020/2021 season.
From the points accumulated before that last fixture, PSG needed victory against Dijon to break the stranglehold that Lyon had maintained in first Division 1 Feminine fit these 14 years. Anything but victory could have jeopardised as the hard work that PSG had put into their season because Lyon were chasing with one point behind.
As part of the home and away matches in the season, both PSG and Lyon met twice this season in the league. In their first encounter, PSG was responsible for snapping an 80-game unbeaten run of Lyon in the league, which is a record for the side. There was a goalless draw between both in the second match.
PSG showed their determination to stop the Lyon domination not only in the domestic competition but also in Europe.
When the draws of UEFA Women’s Champions League pitted them together, Les Parisiennes effectively knocked them out of the Champions League at the quarterfinal stage on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate over two legs. However, PSG were knocked out of the UWCL by eventual winners Barcelona in the semi-finals.
PSG finally get the reward of their hard-working dedication over the years. They finished second in the league for eight seasons, the last three seasons of which have been consecutive. Their standout player was Marie-Antoinette Katoto, with 21 goals to her name.
PSG’s goalie, the Chilean international Christiane Endler kept 19 clean sheets, the most of any player in the league and was a huge part of how they were able to break Lyon’s hold.
