November 03, (THEWILL) – Paris Saint-Germain secured a 2-1 victory over Juventus on Wednesday, with Nuno Mendes scoring the game-winning goal, but it was not enough to take the top spot in Group H.
In a close game at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, PSG’s Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring after just 13 minutes, but Leonardo Bonucci responded with an equaliser six minutes before the break and the two teams went into the interval on level terms.
However, when Mendes reversed the situation midway through the second half, PSG appeared to have guaranteed advancement to the round of 16 as the group champions.
However, a surprising outcome for Benfica versus Maccabi Haifa, saw the Portuguese team score all the six goals they needed to tie PSG on goal differential and nab first place, thanks to their superior away goals tally.
PSG will attempt to continue their unbeaten streak in all competitions on Sunday when they travel to Lorient back in Ligue 1, and on the same day, Juventus will play Inter Milan in a crucial Serie A match.
