PSG May Field Recuperated Neymar In Crucial Lyon Tie On Sunday

BEVERLY HILLS, March 20, (THEWILL) – Brazilian superstar forward Neymar, who suffered an injury to his adductor muscles in the 1-0 Cup match victory at SM Caen on Wednesday February 10 and who missed the doubleheader duels with his old club FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League, has the opportunity to return to the first team squad on Sunday in their crunch tie against Olympique Lyon.

In the absence of the 29-year-old Brazil playmaker, Ligue 1 champions and the capital city giants Paris Saint-Germain dealt handily with Ronald Koeman’s side and scaled past the Barca hurdle 5-2 over both legs thanks to the industry and resilience of the entire team especially Kylian Mbappé, who scored four goals, and Keylor Navas, who stopped a Lionel Messi penalty.

However, in the domestic competition, the French defending champions are joint-second after Matchday 29 and, on 60 points, are equal to Lyon on the table. This position places them three points behind current League leaders Lille, who welcome relegation-battling 19th-placed Nîmes to their Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Sunday for a fixture that Lille are favourites to win.

With PSG second by way of goal difference, they will lock horns with third-placed Lyon on Sunday night, at the Groupama Stadium in Lyon for a game that has the potential of determining how the season might play out for Les Parisiens, especially as they pursue the defense of their League title under new manager Mauricio Pochettino, who replaced Thomas Tuchel as coach in Paris in January.

Pochettino is without the services of a host of injured players such as Mauro Icardi, Juan Bernat, Pablo Sarabia and Thilo Kehrer. Although with this lengthening list of injuries, the club from Paris still defeated Lille 3-0 in the Coupe de France in midweek with another Mbappe and Navas masterclass, it is no guarantee that the match against Lyon will be a walk in the park.

That is why the potential return of Neymar is a huge factor ahead of the Sunday tie and will bring some steely confidence back to the side that suffered an embarrassing defeat in their last Ligue 1 match in the previous week, going 2-1 down to relegation-threatened FC Nantes at the Parc des Princes. It was a defeat that was darkly overshadowed by the brutal robberies at the homes of captain Marquinhos and Argentine wing forward Ángel Di María on the same night.

Hopefully, they can banish all this darkness and avoid the death knell of their chances of successfully defending the Ligue 1 title while continuing to seek European glory this season in the UCL, with Neymar playing his usual part in these if he can avoid another injury.
