PSG Beat Angers 2-1

October 16, (THEWILL) – As Ligue 1 resumed after the international break, PSG extended their winning streak over Angers to thirteen games with a hard-fought 2-1 victory in Paris.
Despite the absence of stars such as Lionel Messi, Neymar, Keylor Navas, and others due to injury or international commitments, the home side went into the match as strong favourites against a team that has been perennial mid-table dwellers since their promotion to the top flight in 2015.
For their part, Angers demonstrated why they have been Ligue 1’s surprise package this season, with Sofiane Boufal, Mohamed-Ali Cho, and Angelo Fulgini’s pace and trickery causing constant problems for the PSG defence.
Just over half an hour into the game, the latter put the visitors ahead. Fulgini perfectly timed his run to tap in Boufal’s low but quick cross from the right flank.
Despite maintaining a large chunk of possession in the second half, PSG’s lack of directness and attacking intent continued, and they unconvincingly dragged themselves over the line, largely thanks to Kylian Mbappe’s individual brilliance.
With a lovely dink for Danilo Pereira to head past Paul Bernardoni in the 69th minute, the in-form star set up the equaliser for his side, and then added a crucial penalty minutes before the final whistle to give his side the lead.
Given that the VAR officials had to instruct the referee to review Pierrick Capelle’s handball at his monitor – a move that caused Bastien Dechepy to overturn his initial decision – PSG were fortunate that the penalty was even awarded.
PSG will play RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Tuesday before returning to league action against Marseille the following weekend.
Meanwhile, Angers will play St-Etienne next.
