Presidential Aide Decries Incompetency Of Legislators In Nigeria

September 16, (THEWILL) – The Senior Special Assistant to the President, Muhammadu Buhari on Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Ita Solomon Enang has expressed disappointment at what he described as poor representation by the Akwa Ibom State Legislature from 1997 till date.

Enang who made the description while delivering a paper on the topic “Accessing the performance of Akwa Ibom State Legislators at the state and national levels” during a round table discussion as one of the activities marking the Correspondents’ chapel’s week at the Emerald Event Center, Nsikak Ediok Avenue, Uyo, reasoned that as a legislator, one is supposed to be like Joshua in the Book of Joshua, chapter 1:1.

Enang, who boasted of being the only Legislator in Nigeria who has passed through all the leaves of legislature from local government to the National Assembly, stated that being a legislator means you struggle for the rights of your people.

“There is what is called ‘Demon of Office’ which afflicts people in executive offices and that is why the Legislators are there to make laws which will call the executive to order when they err.

“In the whole of Nigeria, it is only the 1993 Assembly in Akwa Ibom State that was able to override an executive bill during the brief interlude of Obong Akpan Isemin’ s administration as Governor of the state.

“He brought a bill for the supplementary budget and could not give a breakdown of how the main budget was spent. We rejected it. Which House of Assembly will do that today?” He questioned.

He called on Legislators to do what their job entails and be rest assured that God will always be on their side.

He however applauds Akwa Ibom State for the recent signing of the Anti- Open Grazing bill into law, mentioning that he advocated for it and deserved a credit.

Also contributing on the topic: ‘Maximizing the Investment Potentials in Akwa Ibom in Post Covid-19 Era’ Send. Enang said the greatest thing that is needed in Akwa Ibom State is security, investors confidence and a ready market for the investors goods and services.

He appreciates the fact that the over 18 industries built by the present administration are privately owned, while the state Government provides an enabling environment for them to thrive which is what will make it stand the test of time.

He particularly praised Governor Emmanuel’s administration for managing the best airline in Nigeria, the IbomAir.

“I may not be the friend of the state Government, I may not like all it does but I want to applaud the Governor for providing the management of the Airline to be the best in the aviation industry in the country today” he maintained.
