President Jonathan Leaves For AU Summit In Malabo

SAN FRANCISCO, June 25, (THEWILL) – President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan left Abuja Wednesday afternoon for Malabo, Equatorial Guinea to participate in the 23rd Ordinary Session of the African Union’s Summit of Heads of State and Government.

In keeping with the African Union’s declaration of 2014 as the Year of Agriculture and Food Security, discussions at the summit will, among other things, focus on the evolution and implementation of fresh strategies and measures to improve agricultural production and food security in the continent.

President Jonathan and other African leaders participating in the Summit, according to a statement issued by the Presidential Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, will also deliberate on the appointment of Judges of the African Court of Justice, the appointment of Judges of the African Human Rights Court of Justice and the appointment of the President and Vice President of the Pan-African University.

The statement said the African Heads of State and Government will also consider and adopt the decisions and recommendations of the 25th Regular Session of the African Union’s Executive Board and the Declarations of the 23rd Ordinary Session of the Conference of the Union.

President Jonathan who was accompanied by the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Aminu Wali, the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, the Minister of Industries, Trade and Investment, Dr. Olusegun Aganga, the Minister of Water Resources, Mrs. Sarah Ochekpe and the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, is expected back in Abuja at the conclusion of the Summit on Friday.
