June 09, (THEWILL) – With a 2-0 win over the Czech Republic in Lisbon on Thursday, Portugal went two points clear at the top of Nations League Group A2 after three rounds of matches.
Before the Thursday tie, the two teams were tied on four points apiece at Estadio Jose Alvalade, and it was Portugal who gained control at the top. Bernardo Silva assisted both goals as Joao Cancelo pushed the home side in ahead from a tight angle and Goncalo Guedes added a second before halftime.
The Czech Republic was unable to claw their way back into the fixture until the final whistle seeing them slip to third, as Spain, who defeated Switzerland 1-0 in the other game of the Nations League Group A2, took second place.
Portugal is well positioned at the top of the group at this halfway mark, with wins over Switzerland and the Czech Republic following a 1-1 draw away to Spain in their opener.
The Czech Republic has not appeared out of place in the Nations League’s top flight so far, having previously defeated Spain, but they did not do enough to take any point against Portugal.
