BEVERLY HILLS, December 01, (THEWILL) – Portuguese Primeira Liga’s FC Porto qualified alongside Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages after a goalless draw where striker Gabriel Jesus was denied a winning goal by VAR.

Pep Guardiola’s City scaled through to the last-16 but confirmed their status as group winners with the point from the draw. However, they lost their 100 per cent record in this season’s competition even with long periods of domination at the Estadio do Dragao.

With Marseille’s win over Olympiacos in the other Group C match, the results in this fixture were rendered merely as an academic exercise, with the other two teams in Group C on three points each and no chance of going through.

Porto were held in their own area for most of the opening exchanges. Both sides had penalty claims ignored by Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers. The first shout came when left back Malang Sarr slid in on Raheem Sterling before City goalie Ederson Moraes robustly met fellow Brazilian Otavio in his area in the 16th minute.

In the 22nd minute, Ederson palmed centre back Diogo Leite’s header out of his goalmouth. It immediately sparked a swift counter where opposite number Agustin Marchesin thwarted Ferran Torres who went for goal.

Porto defence had a busy day keeping the scores decent. Sarr made a vital clearance over his own crossbar after pacy winger Raheem Sterling scampered in behind the Porto defence. The England winger was at it again and shot at goal from the resulting corner but it was cleared off the line by Nigerian left midfielder Zaidu Sanusi.

A sumptuous 58th minute throughball from Phil Foden found Sterling but Marchesin was equal to the task and when the rebound came the way of Torres, his footing deserted him.

Marchesin’s goalkeeping was top drawer at different times in the game. In a remarkable 70th-minute sequence, a stretching centre back Ruben Dias inadvertently hooked his teammate Sterling’s attempt out of the Porto goalmouth, but Marchesin recovered to stop Torres’ overhead kick follow-up.

The Argentine goalkeeper made another brilliant save from Dias’ centre-back partner Eric Garcia, earning his VAR reprieve by the time he was finally beaten by striker Gabriel Jesus.
