July 22, (THEWILL) – On Thursday at the Women’s Euro 2022, Alexandra Popp became the first woman to score in four straight games at one tournament in an end-to-end match, where Germany defeated Austria 2-0 to advance to the semi-finals.
Even though Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s team was given a tough time the entire game by a spirited Austrian team, Lina Magull’s neat goal in the 25th minute and Popp’s late second, kept Germany’s dream for a ninth European championship alive.
At the Brentford Community Stadium, Germany got off to a jittery start. They narrowly avoided a major scare when Marina Georgieva headed a corner kick against Merle Frohms’ right post in the 13th minute.
However, Magull deflected Klara Buhl’s deft left-wing cut-back into the bottom-right corner for her second goal of the competition to open the scoring. Sarah Puntigam struck the foot of the post after Barbara Dunst’s fantastic 35-yard lob narrowly missed the crossbar, as the Austrians continued to press.
But it was Die Nationalelf that found a second goal in the final minute, with goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger smashing a clearance against Popp and in as Germany set up a matchup with the Netherlands or France.
