July 28, (THEWILL) – Alexandra Popp scored in a record-setting fifth consecutive Women’s European Championship match, propelling Germany to a 2-1 victory over France on Wednesday, thanks to her brace.
The Wolfsburg striker opened the scoring in Milton Keynes with a volley after 40 minutes. She had previously scored in each of Germany’s four victories en route to the final four.
Germany was making their record 10th appearance at this stage when Kadidiatou Diani’s shot off Merle Frohms hit the post and went in to tie the game.
Even though Germany trailed for the majority of the second half, Popp scored again in the 76th minute to give her team a chance to contend for the trophy against the tournament hosts England at Wembley on Sunday.
Germany found a way to win again, as they always do, and now have nine victories in their 10 semi-final appearances in this competition. They are now 90 minutes away from winning for the ninth time in a competition where no other female national team had won more than twice.
