BEVERLY HILLS, September 03, (THEWILL) – At least one protester has been shot by the police in Lagos when an angry mob invaded the Circle Mall, Jakande, Lekki, where a South African department store, Shoprite is located, to protest the xenophobic attacks in South Africa. The condition of the victim remains unclear as at the time of writing this report.

Eyewitnesses said one police van was torched by the mob who barricaded the Lekki /Epe Express way at Jakande junction as police fired multiple rounds into space to scare them off.

Witnesses further claimed that hoodlums popularly called area boys wielding cutlasses, stones and broken bottles have hijacked the protest and are attacking and extorting motorists

Nollywood actress, Belindah Effah, wrote in a Twitter post that “Jakande area is very unsafe right now; Area boys everywhere. Everyone ran and left their cars just now.

“As I was about to run out, the boys carrying machetes and stones told me it’s not me they are after, they are looking for South Africans to kill.

“These same boys vandalised some cars. I saw one of them stone a car and broke the windshield.

“After a while, they came to our car and asked for some money. They have blocked the Jakande Road and passengers are so afraid.”

President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday said he has dispatched a special envoy to South Africa to meet with the President of that country over the violent attacks on Nigerians and their businesses by some South African blacks.
