Pogba Not Expected Back For At Least A Month Amidst Contract Uncertainty

January 08, (THEWILL) – Manchester United’s interim manager Ralf Rangnick has confirmed that Paul Pogba is still “four or five weeks” away from returning to Manchester United training.

The 28-year-old midfielder has not played for United since a 2-2 Champions League match with Atalanta on November 2, when he suffered a calf injury while on international duty with France.

Pogba had been expected to return early in the new year, according to Rangnick, but that timetable has now been pushed back.

Speaking with the club’s website, the German manager said: “As far as I know, I was told a week ago, it would be a minimum of at least another four or five weeks before he is fit for training again. I saw him this morning before the training session. He was in the locker room, and I hope he will be back as soon as possible.”

Pogba had seven assists from nine Premier League appearances prior to his injury, averaging one assist per 90 minutes on the pitch. Only Bruno Fernandes (eight) has assisted more goals for United in all competitions this season, despite Pogba missing United’s last 11 games.

Rangnick, who took over as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s temporary replacement in late November, has yet to see Pogba play actively, but the German is invested in not rushing him back to action.

“Right now, he’s not been part of the training group and, even if he was back whenever, two, three or four weeks, it will take some time,” Rangnick said.

“It’s one thing to be training fit, but he needs to be fit for the match and competition in either the Premier League or the Champions League and this will still take some time.”

Pogba is in the final six months of his United deal and is widely expected to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season. United has offered the Frenchman a new contract for £500,000 a week, but there has not been any changes in the contract situation at the moment.

Rangnick stated last month that it is not his responsibility to encourage Pogba, or any other United player, to stay at the club.

The Red Devils return to Old Trafford on Monday for an FA Cup third-round match against Aston Villa.
