November 22, (THEWILL) – Manchester United’s two leading possibilities to succeed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are Paris Saint-Germain’s Mauricio Pochettino and Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers, both of whom would be willing to take the position now rather than at the end of the season, if the club make an offer.

As THEWILL reported, a terrible run of results and performances, forced the Old Trafford club to terminate Solskjaer’s contract on Sunday and Michael Carrick was made caretaker manager. The basic plan is for United to name an interim manager before making a permanent hire at the end of the season.

United chose the interim plan to give them time and flexibility while they hunt for a new permanent replacement to take over the club, but they will move to the next stage if one of their chosen candidates becomes available sooner.

Rodgers now has the greatest backing inside United’s hierarchy, while Pochettino is popular with the Glazer family and iconic former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who has formed a personal relationship with the Argentine in recent years.

Rodgers, who has impressed since returning to the Premier League with Leicester, and Pochettino, who is under contract with PSG until 2023, would both accept the position immediately if it were offered, based on sources privy of their positions on the opportunity.

United, on the other hand, would have to take the initiative and make an official approach and that is what both managers are expecting will happen sooner than later.

In terms of United’s attitude on an interim, the club appears willing to give Carrick a chance to improve his results over the next week or two. They are also not opposed to keeping him and Mike Phelan in charge for a longer period of time if the situation improves in that time.

Gary Neville, a former United captain, has previously publicly pushed Pochettino to leave PSG, implying that the Red Devils would be a more appealing prospect for him than the star-studded Ligue 1 side who have had a tough but impressive start to the season in France.
